Spotlight on Deaf People and Law Enforcement

DTV News offers this important segment about the experience of Deaf people when interacting with law enforcement officers. The segment notes that some local municipalities have developed visor cards to help communication between law enforcement and Deaf people, and also provides tips for safe interactions.

The nature of interactions between Deaf people and the police was the topic of Police Deaf Near Far, a 2012 production by TerpTheatre and Oakland University. Click on the image of the website (at right) to visit an archive of the production.

Research about interactions between Deaf people and law enforcement is being conducted by Robert Skinner, a PhD researcher at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.
